Encouraging student participation
The UQ Student Charter outlines student responsibility to "provide
fair and honest feedback on teaching performance and the presentation of
courses".
Providing students with plenty of notice about evaluations and when they
will occur can increase the thoughtfulness of their responses and the level
of detail in their comments. Students are usually willing to provide
feedback if they believe that it will be used effectively by academic staff.
As such, you may also wish to inform them of any changes you have made to
your teaching or courses in response to previous evaluations, or of any
areas about which you would be particularly interested in receiving
feedback. One way of providing this information is to include in your Course
Profile a paragraph such as the following after it has been customised to
your course and context.
Course evaluation
We are always looking for ways to improve XXXX9999 and believe that feedback from students is one of our most valuable sources of information about the course. At times during the course and/or after the course is completed, you may be asked to provide feedback in various ways - sometimes informally through discussions with teachers or short written responses, and sometimes through formal teaching or course evaluation surveys. Although providing feedback on teaching and courses may at times be time-consuming or inconvenient, we do ask that you make the most of opportunities to give us constructive suggestions about how we can continue to improve our teaching and your learning.
