Report on Survey of Large Class Teaching in Australia

Sixty-nine highly accomplished teachers (HATs) involved in this project and 22 academic developers were surveyed on how large class teaching operates in their universities.

The findings of the survey include:

the configuration of large classes;
coordination and management methods;
teaching and assessment methods;
major issues with large classes; and
both the most and least successful strategies used to enhance learning in large classes.

1st National Teaching Large Classes Workshop (July 2001)

REPORT

This report documents the proceedings of the 1st National workshop held at the University of Newcastle. Participation was by invitation and 44 highly accomplished teachers from 24 universities attended along with 24 academic developers. Summaries of the discussions are available below.

NOTES

These notes summarise discussions from the workshop focussing on five major areas student issues in large classes covering topics such as:

teaching management and curriculum issues;
administration, resources and institutional support;
teaching and learning strategies and assessment.

These issues were further discussed in relation to their impact in specific discipline areas.

BURNING ISSUES

Participants also identified issues that were not covered in the workshop. Responses to this exercise, entitled 'burning issues', were used in planning future project activities including the 2nd National workshop.

2nd National Teaching Large Classes Workshop (November 2001)

REPORT

2nd National workshop was held at the University of Queensland. The purpose of this workshop was to further disseminate project findings and resources, to obtain feedback on project activities and individual university initiatives, and to inspire participants to be "agents of change" within their own institutions. Report will be available here in December 2001.
